2011 Mars Society Poster Contest

The Mars Society is calling on members and friends to design and submit posters to the 2011 Mars Society Poster Contest.  The winning design will be used as the primary graphic for publicizing the 14th Annual International Mars Society Convention, to be held in Dallas, Texas on August 4 – 7, 2011.

The main theme of this year’s convention is “Frontier: Mars”.  With this, the Mars Society hopes to emphasize that the Red Planet is a future home for mankind, and that humans will go there to stay, to create a new world and not just for exploration.

Other related themes that could be incorporated into the poster design include – “Pioneers”, “Texas”, “Colonization”, “Settlement” and “Terraforming”.  The poster design should make clear that the exploration of Mars is only the first step to a new and promising era in human development.

The winner will receive free admission to all sessions of the Mars Society’s annual convention in Dallas, as well as a ticket to the main banquet.  [Airfare and hotel accommodations are not included.]  The deadline for submitting all poster designs is Friday, March 11, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. EST (note this was extended from the March 4th deadline).

To submit your poster, please e-mail the sample to: postercontest@marssociety.org.  Please also use this e-mail address for any questions regarding the contest and/or the submission process.

Meeting Minutes for February 2011

There were 9 persons in attendance. We welcomed guest students from UTD.

The meeting opened with a discussion of South by Southwest (http://sxsw.com/) which will be held in Austin the week of March 11-20. We also discussed ConDFW (http://www.condfw.org/) which was held in Dallas in February. There were several great tracks on space/science themes at ConDFW. We appreciated the National Space Society helping with flyer handouts.

Dan gave a treasury report and brought in t-shirts from prior mars society conferences for sale.

We reported on convention progress and formed an outreach subcommittee. We also discussed the Mars society art contest. The submission date for the art contest has been extended to March 11th. The winning design will be used as the primary graphic for publicizing this year’s convention. The winner will receive free admission to the convention and a ticket to the main banquet.

We voted to purchase additional books, The Case for Mars, and create chapter business cards.

Last we discussed NASA’s exciting website http://marsparticipate.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/participate/sendyourname/ which allows you to submit your name to be included on microchip on the Mars Science Laboratory.
